Hazel the hedgehog has found a crunchy apple for her afternoon snack. She carries it proudly in both paws as she waddles home. It smells so delicious that she may take one tiny bite along the way. Color Hazel and her tasty treasure for a sweet woodland scene!
Hazel has spotted a wonderful apple and is carrying it carefully in both paws. It may be her special find from under an apple tree, or perhaps it rolled onto the woodland path. Her pointy little nose is probably taking in its sweet smell! Color the apple first, then decide where Hazel is heading. A nest of leaves, a hollow log, or a cozy garden corner would all make lovely homes for her.
Give Hazel warm brown spines, then use a lighter tan or peach shade for her face, tummy, and paws. Her apple could be bright red, sunny yellow, or green with a rosy patch. Color its leaf fresh green and its stem brown. Around her, try orange and gold for fallen leaves, dark brown for a log, and deep green for grass. A few small red berries can make the forest floor look especially inviting.
Hedgehogs are covered in stiff spines that help protect them from danger. When they feel scared, they can curl into a prickly ball. They usually come out more at night than in the daytime, using their excellent sense of smell and hearing to look for food. Hedgehogs eat things such as insects and worms. In the wild, they do not carry apples on their backs, even though storybooks often show them doing that!
