A Spiral from the Seashore

This lovely seashell has a swirling spiral that leads your eyes from the center all the way to its wide edge. Wave-like lines and bubble-shaped patterns make it feel as though it has just rolled in from the sea. Color around the spiral slowly, choosing a new shade whenever you reach a fresh section. By the end, Shelly may look like she is carrying a whole ocean adventure inside her shell.

Ocean Shades for Shelly

Start with pale sandy beige, cream, or peach for the shell’s main areas. Then bring in ocean blues, turquoise, sea green, and purple for the wave and bubble patterns. You can make the spiral darker near the center and lighter toward the outside, or do the opposite. Add white highlights beside blue sections to suggest sea foam. A sandy yellow background with a few blue dots can turn the page into a beach scene.

Seashells Are Animal Homes

Many seashells are made by soft-bodied ocean animals called mollusks. The shell gives the animal a hard home and helps protect its body. As some mollusks grow, their shells grow too, adding more material around the outside. Not every shell has a spiral, but spiral shells are common and beautiful. Empty shells can wash onto beaches after their animals are no longer living in them.
