A Treasure from the Tide

This seashell is a small beach treasure waiting to be discovered. Its curved shape may have once been home to a sea animal, and now it rests safely on the sand. Notice the lines and sections on the shellβ€”they are perfect places for your own fancy designs. You could make it look like a candy-striped shell, a glittery rainbow shell, or a shell with tiny dots like secret underwater stars.

Design Your Own Special Shell

Seashells can be creamy white, peach, pink, gray, brown, or even purple, so you have lots of choices. Start with one soft color, then add darker lines along the ridges. Try pink and orange stripes, blue and purple spots, or a rainbow of small bands. Color the beach sand tan or golden yellow. If water appears nearby, use pale blue with a little white for gentle foam.

Seashell Facts for Curious Kids

Many shells are the hard outer coverings of animals called mollusks, such as snails and clams. As the animal grows, its shell grows too. Empty shells can wash onto beaches after the animal is gone. Shells come in many shapes, including spirals, fans, and long smooth tubes. It is fun to look at shells, but it is kind to leave any shell that still has a living animal inside.
