Herman’s Traveling Home

Herman the hermit crab is peeking out of the shell he wears as a home. He can pull himself safely inside when he feels shy or needs a rest. Unlike many animals, hermit crabs do not grow their own hard shell. They search for empty shells instead. This makes Herman’s home extra special: wherever he goes along the beach, his little house goes too.

Make a One-of-a-Kind Shell

The shell is the perfect place for a bold design. Draw stripes, spots, swirls, or little stars in your favorite colors. You might choose sandy brown for Herman’s legs and claws, with a tan shell covered in orange spirals. Or make a rainbow shell that no real crab has ever found! Add blue water, cream-colored sand, and a few green sea plants to finish his seaside home.

Hermit Crab Home Facts

Hermit crabs look for empty snail shells to use as homes. As a crab grows bigger, it needs to find a larger shell that fits. Some hermit crabs may inspect several shells before choosing one! Their eyes sit on little stalks, helping them peek around from their shell doorway. Even though their name says “hermit,” many hermit crabs gather in groups near the shore.
